Argentina began their world cup campaign as they faced Iceland yesterday. The match ended in a draw with both the sides scoring 1 goal each.
Sergio Aquero scored the first goal of the evening and also his first goal in the world cup after nine appearences. The goal was courtesy of a shot by Marcos Rojo that was saved by the Iceland goalkeeper and went straight to Aquero who slotted the ball in the left corner of the net.
Just 4 minutes after the first goal Iceland equalized.
Messi in the 75 minute had a chance to win the game for Argentina from a penalty but it was saved by the goalkeeper who blocked a poor shot from Messi.
Messi had 11 shots on target the most by any player in the tournament but he still failed to score.
Whether this was just a bad day for messi and argentina remains to be seen, all we can say is these lost points could prove to be decisive in their run for the world cup trophy.
The match was one sided affair with Argentina dominating posession and shots. However they could never convert those chances into goals and the defense looked fragile and weak. Argentina next face Croatia on 21st June.
