Oscar’s pay tribute to Sridevi & Shashi Kapoor.
At the 90th Academy awards ceremony Bollywood legends Shashi Kapoor & Sridevi were honoured in the ‘Memoriam’ montage, which pays tribute to everyone the film industry has lost in the past year.
Shashi Kapoor had died last year in December aged 79. He had been ill and in a wheelchair for years. Bollywood also lost its First Female superstar Sridevi aged 54 who died because of drowning in her hotel bathtub accidentally.
Shashi Kapoor starred in several Merchant-Ivory films of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, among them The Householder, Shakespeare Wallah
and Heat And Dust
. One of his last films, 1993’s In Custody
, was also a Merchant-Ivory production. James Ivory, one-half of the collaborative team, won an Oscar today for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film Call Me By Your Name
Sridevi made 300 films in several languages over 50 years. Some of her finest performances are in the films Sadma, Mr India, Chandni and English Vinglish.
Both Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi, who were Padma awardees, were cremated with state honours.
